A touch of Hameln in Bali

Dewezet, Hameln on 16 July 2014
An idea becomes reality: Angela Bendix' association provides home and education for Indonesian children

When Angela Bendix had the idea of an aid project last summer, she did not know what to expect. "It is still a lot of work to do and I was actually hoping that the effort will gradually reduce, but the opposite is the case", Bendix says.

After a haunting trip to Indonesia Bendix had made it her mission to accomodate children and youths in an orphanage who have no parents or families or growing up under difficult circumstances. "The priorities are education and training." After the report in Dewezet, many supporters were found to push forward Bendix' vision - with success: the idea developed into a registered nonprofit association with 28 members and individual donors. "That is fantastic and encourages me to continue.“ But it was a long journey, until it became finally „Anak Domba Bali – Future for children e.V.“, she later revealed. "I relearned that you need stamina, if you want to achieve something.“

Since Juli 2013 ten children have been accomodated in the house. "Their upkeeping is entirely funded by donations", admits the lecturer for human resources. Some of them are learning the guitar, "the children are really happy and content. All donations are spent 100% for the house. My flight tickets and stays here are entirely payed from my own pocket. The donations enable us to cover the costs for upkeeping, clothes, books, school material and school fees."

Recently a homepage was established, "it is not yet filled with a lot of content, but this will follow step by step“, Bendix says. After all, this is all done as a sideline. At the turn of the year she again visited the project in Indonesia, "because there was still a lot to be clarified and, of course, I also wanted to see and experience the project in its setting. It was unbelievable, how happy the children were, when I arrived. It was gratifying to see, how happily the children went to school and how happily they also returned home.“ Certainly, the little gifts which needed no further explanation - drawing equipment, a football, the board game Mensch ärgere dich nicht - were more than welcome. During her previous trip Bendix had visited various other orphanages and children's houses "just to see how they are organised".

Bendix' children's house gets more and more crowded, room is scarce. Until now the "orphanage" consists of a few rooms in the house of a vicar's family cooperating with Bendix. The association needs funds to build a house for the children. Angela Bendix welcomes "any new impetus".
